Join AMBE
Three entry routes into AMBE: undergraduate admission through JoSAA, postgraduate admission through GATE, and research admission through the IIT Madras research portal.
Entry Routes
Start with the admission channel, then review the program page for curriculum, eligibility, and department-specific details.
Admission is through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). No separate application to the department is required.
GATE qualification is mandatory. Applications go through the IIT Madras M.Tech admissions portal.
Two intakes per year. Accepts B.Tech, M.Sc, and M.Tech holders depending on research group.
M.S. & Ph.D.
Research programs admit candidates twice a year through a three-stage process, followed by fellowship or project-based funding.
Selection Process
Application & Shortlisting
Applications are screened against department and institute eligibility criteria. Shortlisted candidates are invited to the next stage.
Institute-Level Written Test
A written test covering basic mathematics and aptitude, conducted at the institute level for all shortlisted candidates.
Department Interview
A technical interview by the department focusing on the candidate's area of specialisation and research aptitude.
Funding Categories
HTRA
Half-Time Research Assistantship
Institute-funded fellowship, the primary route for most admitted students. Includes a monthly stipend for the full program duration.
National Fellowships
CSIR-NET, INSPIRE & Others
Candidates holding national fellowships may use these in lieu of HTRA. Conditions are governed by the awarding body.
Project HTRA
Project Half-Time Research Assistantship
Funded by a sponsored research project for the project duration; residual period covered by the institute. Students work with the faculty offering the project.
Project NHTRA
Project Non-Half-Time Research Assistantship
Fully funded by an external grant. Prior project experience required. Project must cover the full five-year program duration.
Candidates from R&D organisations may also apply. See the categories of admission document for full details.
Interview Preparation
Research applicants should review the relevant syllabus and understand how advisor allocation works before the interview.
Syllabus varies by research group. Direct Ph.D. uses the same syllabus as M.S.
The department emphasises student independence in selecting a research advisor.
Students on HTRA or national fellowships may select any faculty member whose research matches their interests, subject to the guide allocation policy.
Students admitted under Project HTRA or Project NHTRA work with the faculty member offering the project position.
Review faculty research areas before the interview to identify potential advisors.
